there are several different types of bows, Long bows, Recurve, and Compound bow. All compete within there own styles and skill levels. I would suggest you go down to your local archery store and try out several different types and brands take a few lessons and then decide what type and class you would like to compete in.

    Check out

    nfaa.org

and look at the many different programs they have for new archers

    if your looking for compound
do u want a hunting style bow or competition style
good brands are mathews, hoyt, bowtech, and pse
look at their websites and find one that looks like what you want
or go to a archery shop or a outdoor type place like cabelas and find one then you can test shoot them if they have a shooting range

Start off shooting a Recurve, get the feel of Archery; how to shoot a simple starter bow with an accurate shot.

Then if u feel this is not your type of bow, go looking for a compound, any bow with a large adjustable draw length and adjustable poundage/weight will suit anyone will to try this sport.

The first question would be, what kind of competition? There are many types, as many as there are bow types. What’s your goal? If you have Olympic ambitions, then the answer is simple, you want a recurve, as that’s the only bow allowed in the Olympics. Other than that, you have to be more specific. Although as said above, the best place to get started is a recurve, to go a bit more, a recurve with sight is the best to get started in this sport. Reason being, with a sight, you still have to learn to shoot properly but the sight eliminates any doubt of aiming error. Here’s the key though, don’t worry if you’re not hitting the target. The thing to look for is whether you can group or not. Grouping means, you can place all your arrows in a small cluster. If you have a tight group, but they’re not in the middle of the target, then your problem is your sight is not adjusted properly, so just move the sight. If you can’t group, have one arrow at 3 o’clock and another at 9 o’clock, then the problem is your form.
